The one we chose is the Hospice of Westchester in White Plains, NY. While expecting a more light-hearted decision.how could I steer them away from that choice?! So I explained to them what a hospice is and we agreed to find a local one and raise money for them this year. But after narrowing down our options, and by unanimous vote, the children decided that they wanted to help "the dying". Everything from helping the poor and people without food, to providing for students without iPads and kids who need toys. When picking our Mission and Outreach Project for the year, I wanted to truly start from scratch and introduce the kids to the brainstorming process, generating answers from their own hearts and minds about how best to help the world. I am the Director of Christian Education at the First Congregational Church of Chappaqua, and the Sunday School Teacher for our PreK-3rd Grade class.

The aftermath of emancipation, known as the Reconstruction era (1863–1877), saw an attempt to transform the Confederate states by providing former slaves with legal rights and citizenship. In tracing and attributing black disempowerment to the legacy of slavery, Du Bois’s theorizations of the impact of the Reconstruction Era are considered his most important contribution to African American literature.įollowing the American Civil War (1861–1865), the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment emancipated approximately 3.9 million black men, women and children, ending four hundred years of institutional enslavement in North America. As the first black African American to earn a PhD from Harvard University, Du Bois’s writings ‘helped to create the intellectual argument for the black freedom struggle in the twentieth century’. William Edward Burghardt Du Bois (1868–1963) was an American sociologist and historian who later became an active civil rights campaigner and Pan-Africanist.

The Angel of Darkness by Caleb Carr5/13/2023 Through this city hurtle the appealing people we got to know in the previous novel: Dr. Once again, he has created a turn-of-the-century New York City that feels as authentic as a fading tintype. Sequels usually don't work, but in "The Angel of Darkness," Caleb Carr has written at least as winning a historical thriller as his best seller "The Alienist." Hear Caleb Carr discuss "intellectual leisure reading." Hannibal harris5/13/2023 But Starling has never forgotten her encounters with Dr. The doctor is still at large, pursuing his own ineffable interests, savouring the scents, the essences of an unguarded world. Hannibal Lecter escaped from custody, seven years since FBI Special Agent Clarice Starling interviewed him in a maximum security hospital for the criminally insane. In one of the most eagerly anticipated literary events of the decade, Thomas Harris takes us once again into the mind of a killer, crafting a chilling portrait of insidiously evolving evil - a tour de force of psychological suspense. Note the similarities in yours and his, the high vaulted chambers of your dreams, the shadowed halls, the locked storerooms where you dare not go, the scrap of half-forgotten music, the muffled cries from behind a wall. Invite Hannibal Lecter into the palace of your mind and be invited into his mind palace in turn.

Dead Lions by Mick Herron5/13/2023 uk My ThoughtsĪmidst all the ARCs and Booker nominees – and especially as I was stuck in a car for hours as we drove down to see my parents which is not my favourite place to read – a fun and entertaining novel was called for and Herron’s series, to which I am very late in the day, fitted the bill perfectly. In the Intelligence Service purgatory that is Slough House, Jackson Lamb’s crew of back-office no-hopers is about to go live. Now Lamb’s got his phone, and on it the last secret Dickie ever told, and reason to believe an old-time Moscow-style op is being run in the Service’s back-yard. Good at following people, bringing home their secrets.ĭickie was in Berlin with Jackson Lamb. And Dickie was a talented streetwalker back in the day, before he turned up dead on a bus. But one that seems predictable afterwards, with the benefit of hindsight.” Synopsisĭickie Bow is not an obvious target for assassination.īut once a spook, always a spook. “Means a totally unexpected event with a big impact.

Steinbeck then notes that one of the best is "The Cop and the Anthem," in which a homeless bum, Soapy Throckmorton, prepares for the rigors of winter: The well-educated but lazy Soapy discusses his situation with his friend, Horace Truesdale, who does not share Soapy's view that three months in the city jail is a fine way to spend the season. Henry, created many lively characters and noteworthy stories, which were often set in turn-of-the-century New York City. While standing in his study, author John Steinbeck states that writer William Sidney Porter, who was known as O. |
